Women Aging Issues for Psychology Professionals

Professional psychology and counseling can help women overcome aging anxiety and fears. This site summarizes research with 1,000+ women into aging attitudes and perceptions, offers articles, checklists and resources for professionals and patients, with information about a forthcoming book.

For Psychology Professionals

Professional psychologists and counselors have two interests in the WOMENSPEAK Project.

  1. Resources here will help them understand how their women clients feel. They can recommend their clients visit the site to help themselves.
  2. Women mental health professionals often have the same aging issues as other women and can benefit by addressing their personal aging issues.

Encourage your clients to complete a survey and use the information on this site. Many of the Help Yourself resources include activities to help them understand themselves and gain control of their thoughts and feelings. Women have said that just knowing they are not alone in their fears helps them cope.

Women are often embarrassed to speak about their fears, yet research has shown nearly half of 1000 women surveyed (47%) were afraid of getting older. This fear correlates with health behaviors, emotional and cognitive responses to stimulus words, abdominal (immune) health, confidence in self-care ability, perceptions of the aging process, and more.
