Choosing a Life Coach

Finding a Life Coach Who Is Right for You

Looking for some help in making a change in your life—perhaps to improve your health and fitness, finances, relationships, or career? More people are turning to a professional life coach to assist them in enhancing the quality of their lives.

What is Coaching?

Coaching is an interactive process that helps clients set goals, take more action, make better decisions, and more fully use their natural strengths. It is not counseling or therapy and does not focus on psychological or emotional disorders.

A professional coach works with clients as a professional partner and helps clients discover their own answers and steps to take to for better living. A coach does not act as an expert, authority, or healer.

How to Select a Coach

The International Coach Federation (ICF) recommends the following when you are looking for a coach:

  • Learn more about coaching.
  • Determine what your objectives are and if you could benefit from working with a coach to achieve those objectives.
  • Look for a coach that has the most qualities and experience that you seek.
  • Interview three coaches before you decide. Ask the coaches about their training, qualifications, skills, experience, coaching philosophy and coaching specialty. Also ask for at least two references.
  • Make sure the connection with the coach you select “feels” right to you.
